San Francisco League of Conservation Voters endorses Catherine Stefani for District 2 Supervisor. We base our endorsement on Supervisor Stefani’s commitment to, and demonstrated record of, ensuring both affordable and market-rate housing are built in D2. We look forward to working cooperatively with Supervisor Stefani during her second term to move City policy towards vital local environmental issues, including better public transit, both in D2 and citywide, and increased water conservation and reuse to protect the Tuolumne and the San Francisco Bay.

In her first full term on the Board of Supervisors, Stefani supported two important new housing developments in her district: the redevelopment of the Lucky Penny site at the corner of Masonic Avenue and Geary Boulevard and the redevelopment of the UCSF Laurel Heights campus at 3333 California Street. Together, these projects will bring roughly 640-850 units to the District. Of these, approximately 190 will be affordable units, with a significant number earmarked for senior citizens. Stefani has also shared with SFLCV that she is actively working to identify a location for offsite affordable units associated with the Lucky Penny site—units supported by a $4 million investment required as a condition of the project’s approval. While these projects faced significant community pushback, Supervisor Stefani navigated neighbors’ concerns and helped keep these much-needed housing units off the chopping block. This is a key role we expect Stefani to continue to play in a second term to bring even more housing to D2 and citywide.

On other crucial local environmental issues, such as improved public transit and sustainable water management, Supervisor Stefani has expressed what SFLCV believes is a genuine desire to learn from and work cooperatively with subject matter experts. SFLCV acknowledges that Stefani’s record on the ongoing battle to protect the Tuolumne is mixed, and that there is room for improvement on the Supervisor’s positions on transit and decreasing car use within D2. Stefani has, however, shown openness in these areas, by, for example, supporting a car-free JFK and the SB-917 Seamless Transit Transformation Act. We look forward to continuing to work with Supervisor Stefani to inform her leadership on the City’s most pressing environmental challenges.

For District 2 Supervisor, vote Catherine Stefani.
