San Francisco League of Conservation Voters has been satisfied with the ongoing efforts of Supervisor Shamann Walton’s work on environmental issues in San Francisco during his four-year term as Supervisor for District 10. D10 is challenging and diverse in its environmental needs both to remedy historic travesties and manage the tremendous development along the southeast corridor from Pier 70 and Hunters Point Shipyard to Candlestick Point.

We appreciate Supervisor Walton’s efforts to protect displaced residents, to build equitable housing developments, and to hold the Navy yard accountable to high standards of environmental clean up. We applaud his work in increasing bike lanes and traffic safety along Evans Avenue in Hunters Point and securing funding for Visitacion Valley safety measures. And we recognize his strong leadership in support for public transportation by bringing back Muni Lines 8 and 8x during the pandemic, with CalTrain and Measure RR, and restoration of Muni Line 15.

However, there are opportunities to strengthen his environmental record, starting with improving his leadership in support of citywide housing production and affordability. We are concerned about the delays imposed by Supervisor Walton and seven other supervisors on the 469 Stevenson Project that commits to 40% on-site inclusionary housing. The reasons for the delays do not appear to have a sound basis, and whatever issues and concerns expressed by the Board should have been resolved before an action was taken. Unfortunately, these delays will invariably lead to higher construction costs that may put the Project in jeopardy. SFLCV would like to see Supervisor Walton take more aggressive action around housing density in order to help the City meet its ambitious and important targets for developing new housing.

SFLCV is also committed to a car-free environment on JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park, and would like to work with Supervisor Walton’s office, SFMTA staff, and D10 residents to strengthen alternative and sustainable transportation options to the park. These options could include free transit, as well as organized shuttles through Park and Rec or SFMTA. At a minimum, D10 residents should have better information to D10 residents where parking is available to them.

In this next term, the SFLCV looks forward to working more closely with Supervisor Walton. Vote for Shaman Walton for D10 Supervisor.
